Workspace guidance

You can put an ordinary AGENTS.md in a local workspace to tell an agent you configure about the folder's purpose, conventions, and allowed work. It is a user file in the workspace, not a hidden instruction generated by Tano.

Create it from desktop

Open a real folder in the desktop app and use Work with an agent to open the guidance wizard. Add background and language preferences, preview the text, then create AGENTS.md. If the file already exists, the wizard offers to open it and does not replace it.

Useful guidance names the workspace purpose, content format, important folders, checks to make before editing, and how to verify finished work. Keep rules short, testable, and consistent with actual file and tool permissions.

Guidance and permissions

AGENTS.md is a convention for an agent to read; it does not grant or restrict operating system permissions. The agent client, OS, and tools still control which paths can be read or written. Other Markdown documents in the workspace are data, not a source of new authorization.

Local MCP offers a limited set of Markdown tools with conditional writes. An agent using its own filesystem or terminal tools may have broader access. See MCP integration and Access control.
